GEL 5610 Environmental Science in the City
In this course we use peer-reviewed literature to explore environmental science research in the City of Detroit.  We look at look at this research in the context of Detroit as a post-industrial “shrinking city” in the Rust Belt Region.  Where possible, we will explore actual datasets.  Each student will be responsible for leading the discussion related to at least one assigned paper from the peer-reviewed literature throughout the semester.

EVS 1500 Introduction to Environmental Science

This introductory interdisciplinary science course is focused and organized around environmental problems and issues that we face in the world today using real stories.  We engage students in critically evaluating these issues and in considering possible solutions.  Students will be provided the scientific background to these issues, empowering them with a strong foundation for dialogue.  Overall this course provides students the means to move forward with a strong environmental science education grounded in critical thinking.

EVS 3100 / GEL 3100 Air and Water in Environmental Systems
We are constantly surrounded by air and water, but how much do we really know about these two very different fluids?  Development of quantitative skills related to applying an understanding of the basic properties of air and water and the dynamics of these fluids at rest and in motion is critical to addressing almost any environmental issue.  Applications will include the role of air and water in environmental problems at multiple scales (and in both urban and natural settings) and integrating a systems approach.

GEL 5360 Hydrology of Natural and Urban Environments
A lecture-laboratory combination, with field trips, emphasizing the practical aspects of hydrology.  This course looks at how water movement, storage and transformation on the Earth’s surface is influenced by landscape characteristics, including human modifications of those characteristics, and weather.  As such, this course will focus on surface water processes.

GEL 5610 Global Change and the Ecohydrology of Cities
In this course we will use peer-reviewed literature to explore how the interrelated hydrology and ecology of cities are influenced by global change.  We will look at recent advances in how hydrology and ecology are studied and valued in urban ecosystems.  We will also look at how these advances are being developed in a way that can be understood by the general public to engage them in global change issues.  While our readings may not be specific to Detroit, we will relate each reading to Detroit-specific issues in our student-led discussions.

GEL 5610 Professional Skills Development for Earth & Environmental Scientists
The complex and intertwined social, economic and environmental challenges of the 21st century demand a workforce proficient in broad range of skills and knowledge. Given the complexity of these emerging challenges, a typical education that provides a foundation in math, science, reading, language arts, and humanities seems to no longer be sufficient to meet workforce demands. These days, employers increasingly value “engagement skills” related to personality, communication, critical thinking, creative innovation and the ability to work in teams.    This course is meant to be a stepping stone for empowering Wayne State graduates to be superior leaders, team members, and role models for future generations both in the workforce and as environmental stewards.
